MENTONE PUBLIC LIBRARY TRIBUTE: In Loving Memory of Tony (Anthony) John Brooker: Monday, 21 November 1949 - Thursday, 20 February 2020

It is with an anguished heart that we inform you of
the recent passing of our much loved and treasured friend
Tony Brooker

Tony's dedication to serving the community and those dearest to his heart,
was matched only by his love for music.
In addition to the many hats he wore at Mentone Public Library
(president, treasurer, co-secretary, acquisitions officer),
Tony was a talented and passionate musician;
often spotted playing the drums, guitar or ukulele
for his local churches and the Longbeach Ukes.

Tony's community work didn't cease there though.
In his youth he was a lifeguard for the Parkdale Life Saving Club.

By the early 2000's, he also volunteered up to two days a week at
Salvation Army's Mordialloc Opportunity Shop,
and was an active member of the Friends of Mentone Station and Gardens.
He spent many a Sunday morning tirelessly helping to maintain
Mentone Railway Station's award-winning gardens,
cleaning off graffiti and yes - he also MC'd and performed the occasional free public gig for commuters too.

Tony was a quiet, hard-working man.
A stoic, selfless soul you could count on.
A sincere spirit and generous friend who went out of his way for his mates.
He was the gentle, caring ear to your spoken woes, the quintessential gentleman,
the fundamental cog that kept the machine in motion,
the music that elevated your creative muse,
and the unsung hero who touched your heart.

Tony also boasted a wonderful quick-wit and sense of humour.
And when invited,
was always game to be a little outlandish
to give others a good laugh and jaw-dropping surprise.

Tony, as you know, this year marks Mentone Public Library's 95th Anniversary.
Though you can't be with us to participate in the full year's program as you planned,
we're sticking to your wishes and ensuring the show goes on.

City of Kingston and its surrounding municipalities' talented local writers
will tell their tales.
While our community's local musicians
will play on for you, mate.

And your Mentone Public Library team will celebrate you, Boss.
We will celebrate the gift that was your friendship
and the extraordinary, community-minded life you led.

We love you and will miss you very much, champ.
Thank-you for everything, Boss.

Rest easy now.
Play your favourite melody, Boss.
Goodnight.

A service will be held for Tony at
186 Old Dandenong Road
(corner Kingston Road),
Heatherton
